Applying to the Department

The new online application system for prospective students is available through the Graduate School website. This online application can be accessed at www.gs.emory.edu/admissions/application.php
and includes the following features:

Allows graduate programs immediate access to your application
Allows you to scan copies of transcripts into application (for review purposes only)
Sends email notification to your recommenders with instructions for submitting letters
Allows for inclusion of purpose statement
Allows for inclusion of writing sample, if required by program
Allows you to track receipt of credentials (GRE scores, recommendation letters)
Please note that official transcripts should be sent directly to the graduate program you are applying to for admission. You will also need to upload your unofficial transcripts while completing the online application.

The deadline to submit all application materials is Tuesday, December 15, 2009 for the class entering Fall 2010. In addition to the formal application, prospective students are required to submit:

TOEFL scores (for international students only);

GRE scores (subject tests are not required); please note the GRE code for Emory is 5187;

Transcripts from institutions attended (one official copy submitted directly to the Department of Comparative Literature);

3 letters of recommendation (submit online through the formal application system or mail directly to the Department); and

a twenty-page writing sample which can be submitted in one sample of twenty pages or two samples of ten pages. At least one sample should be submitted in English.

The Comparative Literature website archives past courses with course descriptions, events organized by faculty and graduate students, and faculty listings. The faculty listing offers an idea of faculty interests and strengths to assist prospectives in planning their research at Emory.
